Change: A lament.

Things will never be the same after Covid-19.
Yes, Hawaii included, we are a sick nation.  Old folks are being "culled from the herd" and dying from Covid-19 and many younger people seem not to care.  We as a people don't realize that things will never be the same as we struggle to resurrect a corrupt and failing selfish economic system not fully understanding that our planetary neglect of the environmental destruction of many years of fossil fuel use have made it easier for microbes and disease to spread easily and more and more pandemics and disease will be coming.  Often, only 3 degrees change in temperature make it possible for some bacteria and viruses to change areas.  Sadly, this is the inheritance we will leave for our children unless we come to grips with the need for change and if we actually change our strategies for survival.

Schools will never be the same after Covid-19.
Online learning will soon be recognized as the only viable solution to educate young folks.  Socialization and group cultural norms will have to develop new cultural methodologies of achieving the aims of humans living together in peace and harmony.  Online delivery of information is easy and affordable even with the present elementary digital structures extant nowadays.  The problem arises when the ancillary benefits of our present system of physically socializing and enforcing group norms and behaviors are abandoned when  all learning will be mostly "distance learning."

Tourism is a now a curse not a benefit to Hawaii after Covid-19.
The early "visitors' to Hawaii provided the first models of tourism that we emulate to this day.  Captain Cooke writes in his journals that the females in Hawaii would swim and paddle out to his ships to distract the crew with sexual temptations while the males pried loose and stole iron nails and other tools.  This describes what was an early model for the tourism we "enjoy" today.  It was plainly deceptive and criminal then and as some argue so is our "tourism" today.  All Hawaiians except for the landowners don't enjoy the benefits of an industry that benefits the few.

The major landholders have controlled Hawaii's destiny since the days of plantations.
Hawaii's majority owners of land control how Hawaii has developed into the tourist real-estate economy.   Hawaii is now so  expensive that more Hawaiians (ethnic Hawaiians) live elsewhere because they cannot afford to live in the land of their ancestors.  Hand in hand with state and local government land is priced too expensivly to grow anything but condominiums or hotels or houses only rich outsiders can afford.  Water resources and land are so expensive it virtually prohibits development of agri-business.

Retail commerce will make changes making it uncomfortable and unprofitable because of Covid-19.
For example, "air conditioning" spreads disease because of the need to control climate inside too warm and too cold enclosed spaces,   But"air conditioning" has become a necessity when folks congregate in stores and shops to buy goods and services.  Never-mind that "social distancing and crowd control diminish profit.  The very nature of how "air conditioning" works presently makes it prone to recirculating and spreading germs.  Areosols float in the air and are spread to everyone in reach.  It is just a fact.  Think about it: airplanes, jails, buses, the list goes on and on!

It is clear that most of our leadership is corrupt, stupid, and don't care.  Both parties enjoy and abuse power when they have it and complain when they don't.  Like sheep to the slaughter we tolerate craziness like the "electoral" college, Mr. Trump and Bill Barr etc., etc.
